Medford Water Quality – Pigtails

Medford Water Quality – “What about pigtails?”

The recent concern for the quality of water delivered by Medford Water Commission (MWC) had to do with occasional lead levels exceeding EPA standards. Most of the high lead levels were found in the downtown core area.  The primary source of MWC water is Big Butte Springs which did not violate lead standards.

It is not unusual to find lead leaching out of old pipes and lead solder joints. One specific source was found to be “Pigtails” which were used to connect the pipe in the street to the line leading into the house.  The last I heard those pigtails were being located and systematically replaced.
