Does Diesel emit more carbon dioxide than gasoline? [Alan]

The Guardian offers an interesting insight: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/nov/10/pollutionwatch-petrol-diesel-climate-change.  While diesel is better than gasoline in terms of GHG emissions, it is far worse in terms of smog-inducing chemicals and particulates (black carbon). The latter, particularly, negate the GHG combustion emissions benefits because this black carbon (soot) is a powerful warming agent since it’s black and absorbs sunlight transforming the incoming radiation into heat.  Black carbon in the Arctic has been held responsible for considerable ice-pack melting via this mechanism. In summary, then, diesel emits less CO2, but because of soot, it’s no better than gasoline.
